Originally founded in 1987, the Badakhshan Institute of Higher Education was reconstructed and re-established in 2001. As of now it has three faculties; faculty of education, literature and social sciences, and agriculture. The Institute teaches more than 600 students and is staffed by 36 male and female lecturers. The Faculty of Education, alone, has five departments: physics, mathematics, Islamic studies, biology and chemistry. All 350 students at the Faculty of Education are being taught by 17 lecturers.

 

In August 2007, the Higher Education Project (HEP) established a Professional Development Center (PDC) to accomplish the following goals:

 

1) Improving preparation of teachers at Afghan faculties of education in universities and in 4-year teacher training institutes;

2) Improving administrative in policy of frame work to sustain quality teaching, learning, and culture of excellence.

 

Construction works began in July 2007 while PDC Started its activities in August 2007.
