Bamyan University was originally founded in 1996 with  Medical, Science, Literature and Agriculture Faculties in the Technical School building. But after the Taliban occupatied Bamyan in 1998, the university was closed.  Bamyan University re-opened in 2004 with Education and Agriculture faculties. The Education faculty comprised of Management, Mathematics and Physics departments then.

With high demand from community, now Bamyan education faculty has 9 departments namely Sociology, History, Dari, Psychology, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English. All 719 students at Education faculty are being taught by 45 lecturers. Four of the lecturers and 138 of the students are female. It is to be mentioned that Bamyan University is the first university that has started the credit grading system in higher education and so far it has proven to be successful.
