The Institutional Development stream assists the partner institutions to prepare and implement focused Institutional Development Plans (IDPs) that lead to continuous improvement in key areas. These plans are based on research conducted by the Institutional Development Teams (IDTs) at each of the 18 institutions and are the result of negotiations between faculty members, students and community members. All of the plans are available in Dari or Pashto and English.
Over a series of five workshops and many follow-up visits the IDT members have been trained to undertake research, draft the IDP and plan priority areas in great detail. Skills in proposal writing and project management have also been enhanced through workshops held in different locations.
Through a series of ‘Institutional Development Packages’ the stream has supported the work of the IDTs as champions of change within the institutions.
Many IDT members have attended Study Tours, most notably to the Center for International Education, University of Massachusetts and SEAMEO - RETRAC in Vietnam and some IDT members attended study tour in Bangladesh. These tours have given IDT members the opportunity to learn from the experiences of other countries and observe developments that can be applied in Afghanistan.
By the end of the project the Institutional Development Teams will comprise a group of educational professionals with highly developed skills and knowledge in all areas of strategic development planning and implementation. They will also be experienced project managers who can monitor, evaluate and report on development within their institutions.
The IDTs in 18 institutions have started implementing institutional plans. Besides contacting other donors in the respective provinces and the capital the IDT members in partner institutions sent their proposals on equipping science lab to Higher Education Project (HEP). To encourage the IDTs in their initiative, the higher education project approved the proposals and provided demanded equipments to FoE.
