Jowzjan Faculty

The Institute of Higher Education in Jowzjan is located in a former military camp. It has two Faculties that train teachers (Sciences and Social Sciences) as well two engineering faculties. It currently trains almost 700 teachers. The present institute came into being in 2001 but it has a history of teacher education which stretches back much further.

The faculty members are ambitious for the future of their students and themselves. Professional development is a very important activity in the life of the institute. Although the institute has relatively few resources, the faculty members do amazing work with the little they have.

This exceptionally motivated faculty has strong leadership in Rector Gul Ahmad Fazli, who arranged the teaching schedules of 56 instructors to allow everyone an hour a day for computer classes. Sheberghan also has a strong HEP computer trainer who uses practical teaching examples to inspire the instructors. These instructors have progressed a lot in the least amount of time. HEP is installing five more computers at this institute because of motivation and progress.

How Can We Improve The Quality Of Teaching At Afghan Universities?

by Sayed Sarwar Yaqubi, Jouzjan Higher Education Institute

It is clear that the process of teaching is an activity involving both students and teacher. Participation by both in the teaching process will affect the quality of teaching in the class. It is the responsibility of the teacher to improve the quality of teaching in the class by using different ways and different methods. Encouraging the students to participate the process of teaching would be another way of improving the teaching quality in the class. Finding new teaching materials for the related subject and preparing a teaching plan or syllabus for every teacher is necessary to improve the teaching quality in class.

As I mentioned, the teaching process is an activity in which the participation of students and teacher is essential. The involvement of students is especially very important and the student should play the main role in the teaching process. As the new system explains, the involvement of students in the teaching process should be more than 70 percent while the teacher should just lead the students in certain areas, if they have difficulty to solve their problems. This system of teaching needs proactive and hard working teachers to prepare a good condition of teaching in the class by various ways, and every student should have enough time to participate in the class. The quality of teaching in the classes would be high, if the all teachers followed this rule.

Teachers in the class are the leader of the classes, so it is their task to find the easy way of teaching by preparing different methods and various system of teaching, which would be proper and suitable to the condition of the class and helpful to the students. Teachers should search different books to find new materials about his/her related subject and teach these found materials to the class in a simple way which would be understandable to all the students. Even though doing this kind job or task would be little bit difficult, especially in Afghanistan’s current situation If we want to improve the quality of teaching in the classes, we should do these kinds of activities.

Encouraging students during the teaching process will significantly affect to the quality of teaching in the classes. By encouraging the students, we can increase the student’s motivation to participate more. The teachers must have or create this ability to them selves to encourage the students by different ways to share their idea about the lesson and show their interest for the lesson. This would be another way of improving the quality of teaching in the classes.

When we want to do something at first we think about it and plan, then we decide to do it. Teaching in the class also needs a plan, which should explain the purpose of teaching in the class. In fact the plan for teacher is like a light which shows him/her the way to achieve the general goal of subject. So having a teaching plan for every teacher is important if he/she wants to improve the quality teaching in the class.

In summary to improve teaching quality in Afghan universities, the teachers or educators should have the abilities mentioned here. All these issues together improve the quality of teaching in the classes, and it would lead the afghan education system toward successes and prosperity.
